Or is there something to this I'm not following (certainly the DVD Player does not start up automatically on insertion on my computer.). Sorry, I meant to post this here. Besides TinkerTool, there is indeed a preference panel that can turn this off, but it's in the respective applications, not in the System Preferences. Mac os x install dvd.app.
